Initial Certification: 11/2020
HPD stands for “Human Presence Detection”. HPD2 is a sensor capable of detecting whether people are present in a defined room and counting them. For this purpose, HPD2 makes use of image data captured by a camera. It also has integrated temperature and humidity sensors, which means that light, heating and air-conditioning can be controlled in line with demand for the number of people present in a room. Identifying actual room use, HPD2 can also be used for managing meeting rooms or for detecting unused office workstations for flexible desk management as well as for managing an efficient elevator usage.
The integrated image analysis compares camera-based pictures with 150,000 positive and 7 million negative examples of human torsi. The pictures are stored temporarily and deleted after the analysis immediately (storage duration <1 second). Only the anonymous information on the number of people in the respective rooms or zones is available via the defined interfaces of the sensor.
Users of HPD2 are controllers in respect of the processing of camera-based image data required for detecting and counting people. Steinel GmbH provides them with guidance on how to comply with EU data protection law in a dedicated privacy leaflet.

BEST
The image analysis to detect and count people takes place exclusively in the sensor. HPD2 deletes the camera-based pictures after the analysis immediately (duration of storage is less than one second). Only the anonymous information on the number of people in the respective rooms or zones is available via the defined interfaces of the sensor.
ATTENTION
As the controllers for the respective processing of personal data, users are responsible for the legitimacy of such data processing.
SUMMARY
HPD2 is a sensor capable of detecting whether people are present in a defined room and counting them. For this purpose, HPD2 makes use of image data captured by a camera. It also has integrated temperature and humidity sensors, which means that light, heating and air-conditioning can be controlled in line with demand for the number of people present in a room. Identifying actual room use, HPD2 can also be used for managing meeting rooms or for detecting unused office workstations for flexible desk management as well as for managing an efficient elevator usage.
The core of the HPD2 sensor is a high-precision optical system combined with a neural AI (artificial intelligence) algorithm.

DETAILS
The target of evaluation (ToE) of this certification is HPD2.
The ToE includes:
- The internal data flow of HPD2;
- The process of anonymization of camera-based image data;
- The web interface for administration (e.g. configuration, access rights);
- The Ethernet, USB, and debugging interface;
- The interface to external gateways;
- The internal memory of the device.
The ToE does not include:
- Special hardware functions as such (camera, sensors for temperature and humidity);
- Ethernet hardware;
- Network and infrastructure of users of the sensor;
- External data flow and gateway to cloud solutions for preparing statistics.
